About Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics (0580)

Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics (0580) is the most-taken IGCSE subject globally and a baseline qualification for university entry in nearly every field. Students cover algebra, number, geometry, mensuration, coordinate geometry, trigonometry, statistics, and probability.

The course is offered at two tiers: Core (grades C–G) and Extended (grades A*–E). Most international schools encourage Extended for any student capable of handling it.

Calculators are allowed in paper 3/4 but not in paper 1/2. Students must be confident with both mental arithmetic and calculator use.

A Mathematics IGCSE is universally required as a basic literacy signal. The Extended grade matters most for STEM and economics pathways. Students considering A Level Mathematics should target an A or A* at Extended.

Frequently asked questions

Should my child take Core or Extended?

Extended for any student capable. It is required for A Level Mathematics. Core caps at C and is suitable for students who find math very difficult.

What is the difference between IGCSE Mathematics and IGCSE Additional Mathematics?

Additional Mathematics (0606) is a separate IGCSE that covers some A Level topics (calculus, advanced trigonometry). Taken alongside 0580, not instead.

Is a calculator allowed?

In papers 3 and 4 yes, in papers 1 and 2 no.

What grade is needed for A Level Mathematics?

An A or A* at Extended is typical.

How long should my child study per week?

4–5 lessons plus 3–4 hours of independent practice for an A grade.
